What does Executive Order 14092 do?
Justice and the firearms bureau were assigned dealer and background-check work; health, education and other agencies had separate support tasks.
Before and after
Before the order
Federal firearm law and the 2022 statute supplied authorities, but implementation and dealer compliance priorities varied.
After the order
ATF issued the engaged-in-the-business rule, agencies promoted storage and community violence intervention, and reports followed. Courts challenged the dealer rule and other specific actions; later policy changed enforcement priorities, though no express revocation of EO 14092 was located.
Who had to do what
| Agency / office | Action | Timing / position |
|---|---|---|
| Attorney General/ATF | Strengthen dealer compliance and background checks | 30–180 days |
| HHS and Education | Support public health, schools and survivors | Ongoing |
| Defense and agencies | Improve safe-storage practices | As directed |
What happened next
EO 14092 signed.
Legal and source detail
How it works legally
The Second Amendment, Gun Control Act, Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, federalism, appropriations and APA constrain implementation. Litigation targets particular rules; the Supreme Court's decisions on firearm statutes do not themselves invalidate the order.
