Executive Order 13080: American Heritage Rivers Initiative Advisory Committee

President: Bill Clinton

Established a temporary committee to review community nominations for American Heritage Rivers.

Status: Revoked — by EO 13225 in 2001.

Is Executive Order 13080 still in effect? No. EO 13225 revoked it in 2001.

What does Executive Order 13080 do?

EO 13080 created an advisory committee of up to 20 public and private members to evaluate communities’ river nominations and recommend up to 20 candidates to the President. The original order contemplated ten designations; EO 13093 raised the limit to up to 20, and the President designated fourteen in July 1998. The order specified environmental, cultural, economic and community-support criteria; it did not itself designate rivers. EO 13093 amended the program later in 1998, and EO 13225 revoked the committee order in 2001.

Administration position: Nomination review was advisory. A river designation required a separate presidential action.
