Executive Order 13792: Review of Designations Under the Antiquities Act

President: Donald J. Trump

Ordered Interior to review large or disputed national-monument designations and recommend possible changes.

Status: Revoked. Is Executive Order 13792 still in effect? No. Executive Order 13792 was revoked. See Federal Register record. EO 13990 revoked this order.

What does Executive Order 13792 do?

EO 13792 directed the Interior Secretary to review national-monument designations or expansions since 1996 that exceeded 100,000 acres or had inadequate consultation, considering protected objects, land use and local concerns. It required an interim Bears Ears report within 45 days and a final report within 120 days. Interior conducted a public-comment review and produced a final report. Later presidential proclamations changed some monuments, with further changes in 2021. EO 13990 expressly revoked this review directive in 2021. The order itself neither reduced a monument boundary nor resolved the legal dispute over presidential authority to do so.

Administration position: The order’s critique of selected designations was a policy position, not a finding that every designation was unlawful.
