Executive Order 13226: President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology
President: George W. Bush
Established a presidential science and technology advisory council of up to 25 members, directed it to advise the President and assist the National Science and Technology Council, and assigned administrative support to OSTP.
Status: Revoked.
Is Executive Order 13226 still in effect? No. Revoked April 21, 2010; PCAST re-established under EO 13539.
What does Executive Order 13226 do?
The order assigned these duties: President — Appoint up to 24 nonfederal members, designate the federal co-chair and choose a nonfederal co-chair; PCAST — Advise the President on science and technology and assist the National Science and Technology Council.
Later evidence reviewed September 23, 2026: EO 13539 revoked EO 13226 and re-established PCAST under a new charter. EO 13539 — revocation and successor PCAST. This later record documents the stated step; it does not by itself establish every downstream agency action or legal outcome.
Before and after
Before the order
The prior PCAST structure rested on earlier orders that this order revoked and replaced.
After the order
PCAST operated throughout the Bush administration, produced reports and was repeatedly continued. Later amendments expanded membership and assigned nanotechnology and information-technology advisory roles. President Obama revoked EO 13226 in 2010 and re-established PCAST under EO 13539.
