Executive Order 13684: Establishment of the President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing

President: Barack Obama

Created a temporary expert task force to recommend ways to build public trust while supporting effective law enforcement.

Status: Completed/expired. Is Executive Order 13684 still in effect? No. Executive Order 13684 is completed or expired. See Federal Register record.

What does Executive Order 13684 do?

EO 13684 established an 11-member task force after national controversy over police use of force and community relations. The group held public listening sessions and organized recommendations around trust, policy, technology, community policing, training and officer wellness. It delivered its final report in May 2015 and then ended. Later administrations adopted, changed or revoked separate policing policies; those actions did not revive this task force.

Administration position: The task force issued recommendations, not binding nationwide police rules; most state and local departments remained responsible to their own law and governing bodies.
