President: Barack Obama
Implemented US commitments on the JCPOA’s Implementation Day while retaining authority for sanctions outside the nuclear deal.
Status: Revoked.
Is Executive Order 13716 still in effect? No. Revoked and superseded by EO 13846 in August 2018; some sanctions authority was carried forward.
What does Executive Order 13716 do?
EO 13716 implemented part of US commitments on the Iran nuclear deal’s Implementation Day. It revoked EOs 13574, 13590, 13622 and 13645, amended EO 13628 and kept authority for sanctions outside the deal’s scope. It did not lift every Iran sanction. In August 2018, EO 13846 revoked and superseded EO 13716, reimposed relevant measures and consolidated some continuing provisions. OFAC explains which authorities moved into the later order.
