Executive Order 13693: Planning for Federal Sustainability in the Next Decade

President: Barack Obama

Set government-wide targets for emissions, renewable energy, buildings, water, waste and federal vehicle fleets through 2025.

Status: Revoked — by EO 13834.

Is Executive Order 13693 still in effect? No. EO 13834 revoked it.

What does Executive Order 13693 do?

EO 13693 set targets for federal operations through fiscal 2025, covering greenhouse-gas emissions, clean energy, buildings, water, waste and vehicle fleets. Agencies used it for sustainability plans until EO 13834 expressly revoked it in May 2018. Later federal sustainability directives used separate authority; EO 14148 revoked the 2021 directive EO 14057 in January 2025. Those later changes did not restore EO 13693.

Administration position: The order directed federal operations; it did not impose its numerical targets directly on private households or state governments.
